"The Vancouver Institute for Higher Learning is delighted to announce our forthcoming January Lecture: “The Enlightenment View of Education”. This event is primarily intended for students (16-21), parents, and members of the public who are interested in a focused discussion on education and the systemic challenges of the transition between high-school and university. We will explore many questions: What makes a ‘good’ education? What should we expect from education? How should education systems respond to automation? What happens when we see education as an invest-ment? What’s the best return on the investment?"

"The industrial revolution has enabled unprecedented progress. Hubris is nothing new under the sun but it must be emphasized that we've allowed ourselves to foolishly believe all our problems can be solved in the context of the external: technology, a beauty cream, money etc. Our 'external progress' has come at an 'internal cost'. Consider the fact that most of the skills we expect our little ones to acquire are intended to serve our external reality. But isn't there an inherent danger in neglecting the internal dimension? Of course there is! For instance, character is something that we construct on the inside. You can't buy it, you need to earn it! The situation has gotten pretty bad. In fact, I would describe it as an existential crisis in leadership. As per David Brooks and his terrific book  — The Road To Character —“[m]any people graduate from college energetic, lively, and impressive bur by age thirty they have become duller more cynical versions of themselves. Their ambitions have shrunk.” Let's discuss this as a community!"
